Folkestone History & Heritage

Never a dull moment

Eating out, shopping, entertainment - essential ingredients of a good holiday or day- out experience. So welcome to Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh.

Good eateries are aplenty and come in all shapes and sizes - from star-rated restaurants to friendly bistros, from cool cafes and traditional tea shops to trendy bars and lively pubs, from fast food places with famous names to good old-fashioned chippies. Sea food is a speciality along this coast, and so are regional dishes featuring fresh produce from the Kent countryside. Stay long enough and you could try the cuisine of a dozen countries as well as English.

Temptations to browse and buy abound in shopping streets in the coastal towns and inland villages. (There will be even more choice when the mult-million-pound shopping area in Folkestone town centre is completed).

The Creative Quarter in Folkestone's Old High Street is the place for arts and crafts. For antiques and collectables, head for Sandgate and Hythe

To round off busy days, take in a show. In the open-air, the 350-seat amphitheatre in Folkestone's Lower Leas coastal park is the venue for band concerts, theatrical and other events from spring to autumn.

The town's premier entertainment spot is the magnificent Leas Cliff Hall where top concerts and shows are staged right round the year. Late birds have a choice of discos and night clubs.
