Our 'great outdoors' - space for contentment

Strolling seaside promenades, helping the kids dig sandcastles and explore rockpools, watching the world go by from a deck chair, hiking and biking in places where it's no-go for cars, checking out the flora and fauna in country parks and nature reserves - just some of the pleasures on offer in our 'great outdoors'.

For rambling and havens of wild life, head for the hills behind Folkestone and the country park to the east of the town. Just west of the harbour and below the Leas promenade is a fine coastal park, providing bays for sheltered swimming, seaside walks and cycle ways as well as an adventure playground and large sandpit for children.

Brockhill Country Park, near Hythe, is a wonderful place to roam and relax, and for walkers and cyclists there are miles of contentment along the banks of the Royal Military Canal. Inland, Lyminge Forest and the pretty Elham Valley are among eye-pleasing destinations for excursions.

An unhurried visit to the Romney Marsh, where a hundred square miles of unspoilt countryside roll down from wooded hills to meet broad sands and shingle beaches and also encompass a fine nature reserve, is a must for everyone who enjoys, peace and quiet and space with contentment.
